A birth doula is a trained professional who provides emotional and physical support to birthing people and their partners during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. They are not medical professionals and do not perform clinical tasks, but rather focus on helping the birthing person feel comfortable, calm, and empowered throughout the birthing process. This can include providing education on childbirth options, helping the birthing person create a birth plan that centers their needs and preferences, assisting with pain management techniques, and offering emotional support and encouragement during labor and delivery. The doula's goal is to ensure that the birthing person, especially BIPOC and LGBTQIA individuals, feels supported and in control during this transformative experience of a cesarean birth.
A postpartum ceremony is a traditional practice in many cultures that honors and celebrates the transition into parenthood and supports the birthing person's physical, emotional, and spiritual healing after childbirth. The ceremony will generally take place within 6 - 8 weeks of birth.
*This practice is essential for BIPOC and LGBTQIA birthing people who often face unique challenges and experiences during pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum.
